A poor man's lesson: appreciation & gratitude

Sometimes having nothing will help you appreciate the true  values of things. Living in gratitude will make your life more abundance and happier.

A penny is not just a penny, it has value.
A dollar not just a dollar, it's worth a dollar (you can get food with it!).
An apple is not just an apple, it is valuable food to sustain your body.
A cup of water is not just a cup of water, it's life!
An run down apartment is not just a run down apartment, it keeps you warm and safe.

To live everyday, and to see the true value of things, will make you a wiser and content person.

Focus and keep busy to kill the scattered afflicted mind

Immerse yourself into something, to the point that your mind is so focused on it, that you forget about all your false idle thoughts, scattered mind and inner problems, so that your mind can recalibrates itself to it's more natural condition.
